Jimmy Braun · Practice
Practice · Pricing · Process

A small practice with fewer projects, deeper attention, and a foot in both cultures.

From Fukuoka, I work with hospitality groups, publishers, and brands that want the editorial rigour of European design and the quiet sophistication of Japanese aesthetics — in one set of hands.

My positioning sits between two markets. In Japan, most premium studios speak the local visual code beautifully but rarely make it travel. In Europe, the Japanese aesthetic is often fantasised, rarely lived. I work in the space between, with the discipline of a French editorial culture and ten years of daily practice in Japan. Prices below reflect this hybrid position : higher than freelance, smaller than agency, with the studio attention of either. See the work →

Open for select projects · June 2026 onwards

01 · Way of working

Depth over speed. Sense over slogan. I take fewer projects per year because each one needs time to be understood before it can be designed. That is the only way I know how to do the work I want to be known for.

02 · Three principal areas

Where I take full responsibility for the result.

These are the long-form engagements where the practice does its best work. Each is an end-to-end project with strategic thinking, art direction and execution under one hand.

01 · Brand identity

Brand identity & visual systems.

Strategy, naming, logo, typography, colour system, art direction, applications. For new ventures and rebrandings that want a coherent world, not just a logo. End-to-end project, two to four months depending on scope.

02 · Editorial design

03 · Hospitality · Featured

Hospitality art direction.

My signature engagement. Menu design, print communication, brand consistency across restaurants and seasonal rotations. 03 · Special projects

Innovation & R&D.

For brands launching something new, projects that don't fit a category, or ventures where the brief is still being drawn. I bring fresh eyes, cross-cultural perspective, and the discipline of working with what's not yet defined. These projects don't follow a standard package — pricing is built from scope.

  • Cross-cultural ventures bridging Japan and Europe
  • New product lines requiring identity & editorial work simultaneously
  • Hybrid projects combining brand, book, photography and exhibition
  • Strategic consulting for entering the Japanese or French market
  • One-off cultural projects with strong editorial component

06 · Process

Three movements.

No project starts with design. Every engagement, regardless of size, follows the same three-part approach. The longer the project, the longer the first movement.

01 · First

Listen.

Conversation, reading, observation. Understanding the brand from inside out, its history, its competitors, its quiet ambitions. No deliverable yet, but the foundation of everything that follows. One to three weeks.

02 · Then

Construct.

Strategic direction, naming, visual exploration, typographic choices. Two or three creative routes presented and discussed, narrowed to one, then refined. The intellectual core of the work. Four to ten weeks.

03 · Finally

Deliver.

Final design, production files, print supervision, guidelines, training. Everything packaged for autonomous use after the project ends. The brand should live without me. Two to six weeks.

07 · Transparent scope

What every engagement includes — and doesn't.

To save time on both sides, here's what comes built into the pricing above and what sits outside it.

08 · Practical

Questions often asked.

Languages
Projects run in French or English. Japanese conversation is fine in person but written work happens in FR or EN. For purely Japanese-market work, I partner with a translator and Japanese copywriter.
Timeline
Standalone projects start within four to six weeks. Long-form engagements typically book six to ten weeks ahead. I usually have one major project in active production at a time.
Payment
A 40% deposit secures the start date, 30% at midpoint, 30% on final delivery. Yen invoicing from Handpan Japan LLC. International transfers accepted in JPY or EUR.
Working remote
Most projects run remotely with structured calls. For hospitality and long-form work, I usually visit on-site at least once. Travel beyond Fukuoka quoted separately.
Smaller budgets
If a project is below the ranges shown, the standalone services (section 04) may fit. For brand identity below ¥1,200,000, I usually recommend a smaller scope first or a phased approach.
Confidentiality
Standard practice. NDAs available on request. Several current clients are not listed publicly. Discretion is part of the work, especially in hospitality and luxury contexts.

Let's start with a conversation.

If something here feels right for what you're building, write me a few sentences about the project. I reply within 48 hours, directly from Fukuoka, with honest thoughts on whether we're a fit.
